These bows are made of ironwood; we have found this wood to be far superior in sound and feel to the more commonly used snakewood. They are about 72cm in length (including the screw) and weigh about 72 grams. The frog and screw adjuster are made of ebony. Photos are for reference only and represent a typical bow of this style.
Bow Types
Baroque bows have a convex curvature, with 20-30% less hair than a modern bow. For convenience, these bows have a modern screw adjuster for tensioning the hair.
Classical-transitional bows are similar in appearance to baroque bows but have a slightly concave curvature and a more stylized (swan-like) tip; this makes them feel closer to a modern bow. They are not normally stocked and will be commissioned for you (4 week lead time).
About the Hair
The quality of hair on these bows is comparable to what you’d get at a reputable luthier. If you have special requests for hair (amount, twist, etc.), we can have the bow rehaired locally, to your preferences, for an additional fee. Please contact us for information about this service prior to ordering.
Sourcing
These bows are specially made for us by a workshop in China; we believe they are the best value on the market. Rather than purchasing bows in bulk, as most retailers do, we work directly with the workshop to commission bows that meet our requirements for materials, style, and workmanship. Our contract allows us to select the best bows from a batch and return the ones that don’t meet our standards. Each bow is thoroughly inspected and tested in Atlanta before shipment. If bows are on backorder, lead time is approximately 4 weeks.
Trial Policy
Bows may be returned for 7 days after the date of delivery. Please keep the original packaging. If you are not satisfied with your bow, simply send us an email; for customers in the US, we will provide a prepaid, insured return shipping label. (International customers are responsible for return shipping; we cannot refund customs charges.) Once your return arrives at our facility, we will inspect it and issue a full refund less our actual (one-way) shipping cost. Refunds may be reduced if the bow is damaged or missing a substantial amount of hair. If the hair is significantly stained near the frog, we will deduct a $20 cleaning fee. Specially ordered (commissioned) bows that are not defective are subject to a 25% restocking fee.
